Small world

So I have a very casual relationship with Listia.  I usually have a couple of credits floating around, so I bid them all on random auctions, get outbid, and repeat.

A couple of weeks ago I did a quick survey and got a bunch of credits.  Then i did another one and got a bunch more.  I managed to win some 1975 Topps and some Dallas Cowboys.

This auction in particular was interesting.  As a Cowboy fan, I've always been a huge Emmitt fan.  When he was playing he was overshadowed personality-wise by Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman, but that was something I could relate to.  So Smith is my only real football player collection.

But that wasn't what made it interesting.  When I went to transfer credits to the seller, I recognized the avatar in an instant.

I had just won an auction from Tom over at The Angels, In Order.  Half the time, reading Tom's blog is like looking at my want list.  He gets all the best Angels cards.

But in true blogosphere fashion, he sent more than just the card I won.

Aikman might have been much less showy than Irvin also, but I don't think there was any doubt on any player's mind who the team leader was.  Aikman wasn't expected to be Dan Marino or Peyton Manning, but he led the team and was maybe the most accurate thrower of all time.

But he didn't stop there.

Nope, I haven't gotten sick of these things yet.  Love 'em.

Listia wins.... errrr.....sorta

I've been trolling around Listia again.  Searching the lower end of the market for auctions with free shipping.  I did a survey, so I'm playing with free credits.

And I've won a few auctions lately.

Two of them happened to come from the same seller.

This card goes into my Tim Salmon PC, which at the moment is way too small.  And it has a cameo from Salmon's college teammate too (we'll ignore his post career troubles for now).

This card goes into my Topps base card Angels binder.  Both cards also happen to feature my favorite Angel uni.

Like I said, they came from the same seller.  And the seller offered free shipping, so he mailed them together.  That's fine.

They were put into a plastic sleeve and wrapped in a piece of paper.  No hard plastic.  Ehhhh.  I guess I don't really mind that if the cards show up unscathed.  And in this case that didn't cause a problem.

I think the seller was honestly trying to throw in a bonus.

In between the two cards was

This is one of those inserts in 1988 Score.  It happens to highlight Don Sutton's 300th win, which he accomplished while a member of the Angels.

But this thing is thick.

And small.

And I bought lots of 1988 Score, so I have it. 


You probably can't see it in the scans, but there are corner shaped dents in the fronts of both of the cards I actually won.  One is just to the left of Chad Curtis' torso, the other is just to left of Jim Edmonds' face (he's looking right at it).

Once I put them into sheets, they probably won't be visible.

But I'll know.

I just went to the mailbox, and what a bunch of goodies in there today.  I got a Ted Williams card for that PC from eBay.  John dropped two more PWEs on me, and P-town Tom sent me a box.  But I wanted to put up a quick post on the other envelope I got today.  I won

these two cards on Listia for 100 credits.  1986 and 1987 Topps mini leaders.  I've been a fan of Gwynn's pretty much since I pulled his rookie cards out of packs of Fleer and Donruss back in 1983.  I went to the card store the next year and bought the Topps rookie.  He thus became one of my first player collections.  So these were good additions to the Gwynn PC.  But the thing that caught my eye was when I turned the cards over:

Apparently Gwynn lost 7 pounds in 1986.  Ummmm, as I said I'm a big Gwynn fan, always will be.  The guy is a class act all the way.  But I'm not so sure Gwynn ever lost weight.  At least that's the way I seem to remember it.

Really? Really??

I was just reading a blog post last night (I wish I could remember the blog) about a PWE arriving with a cracked top loader inside.  I thought to myself "That never happens to me, I've had really good luck with the good ol' USPS".

Then I opened my mailbox.

And this came out.  What the heck?  Did the mail truck run over the envelope?  Let's see what's inside

This isn't a good start

That was a listia win.  But its okay, because there were 6 cards in the lot I won.  I really only care about 1 of them, and he seems to have come out of it all unscathed.
